UNDRGRND Magazine is owned and operated by Newbury Park natives Andrew Mason and Michael Pofsky. The two went to high school together, both graduating from Newbury Park High School in 2015, although never talked or were friends. Years later, Mason, who was attending journalism school at the time and wanted to move his coverage to the music game, reached out to the rapper Pofsky for an interview. Thus, the two crossed paths and began working together, symbiotically growing Mason’s journalism goals with Pofsky’s active music career. 

A pinnacle moment in their relationship came in April 2019, when the two linked up in Boston, Mass. when Pofsky’s RHYTHM.I.C. tour swept through the East Coast. Mason organized an interview with Pofsky on WTBU Radio, proving to themselves that they could work together in a music business setting.

After graduating, Mason returned home in the summer of 2019. He had spent his last year of college following the music lives of Pofsky and other local rappers, such as Deo Cane, Belle, and KollegeKado, and had become fascinated with the storylines of the underground rap scene in “The 805.” By the end of that summer, Mason and Pofsky had put together a lineup of local artists for an inaugural issue of brand new magazine: one that highlighted the impressive local rap talent of the place they grew up in and knew best. At last, UNDRGRND Magazine was born.
