Aaron California Talks Being 4 Years Sober, Dropping a Single Every Month, OG 805 Rap Scene Stories

UNDRGRND Magazine | November 30th, 2022

Issue 7's only Central Coast representative, Aaron California is a year-old rapper, tech support rep, and proud father of one out of Los Osos, California. Aaron has been writing & recording music for almost 20 years, and has plenty of vintage stories about the Northern 805 hip-hop scene to prove it. Aaron has an unusual (yet logical) approach to releasing new tracks — he drops one single on the first of every month, a feat he has successfully followed through on for almost two years straight.

UNDRGRND first caught Aaron on our radar through Issue 5: "The Central Coast" artist, Endless, who has music collaboration history with Aaron (the two most recently linked on "We Never Stop" in June 2022). Outside the underground scene, Aaron credits Mac Dre, Tech N9ne & Mac Miller as some of his personal favorite artists, and says his most notable music moment was opening for Dizzy Wright at The Siren in Morro Bay. Aaron currently lives with his wife and son, Ezra, up in San Luis Obispo County. He tells UNDRGRND he enjoys watching "Black Mirror" & "Bram Stoker's Dracula" in his spare time.

Tonight, I chop it up with Aaron California, and talk about his journey to sobriety, how the 805 scene has changed over the years, and when we can expect a full-length project.
